"Before I ever took a class with Brian Knox, I used to fill pages upon pages, copying his drawings. When he started offering online classes at his old job I studied a lot with him, taking “Head Drawing,” “Figure Drawing,” “Quick-Sketch” and pretty much a class with him whenever it was offered. Fast forward to when he launched Foundation Art School, it was right about the time when I was studying anatomy.
Since Foundation offers one anatomy class each term, in the span of just one year you’ll go through the whole body once, which is fantastic for a student who really wants to dig deep into anatomy. One of the things I really admire about Brian’s teaching specifically is just how immersed he gets in every student. I’ve worked with several fantastic teachers and Brian really spends the time on each person to figure out exactly what they seem to be struggling with and then he’s able to visually and verbally explain the solution. On top of all of that while he’s correcting your drawings, he’s able to do trace-overs drawings that look awesome and are inspirational. Which is hugely important for students.
Lastly, one thing I want to mention is that the ‘layin phase’ of a drawing is the most important stage, and it’s something that we are constantly working on no matter what stage of development in our art journey. Additionally, it’s also where students run into the most issues. Brian is not only excellent at teaching how to get good at this stage, but also how to actually enjoy it, do it with aesthetics, and make layins look incredibly cool. He has created a unique style of laying in drawings and even turned the ‘layin phase’ into an art itself."
Q.
Art Goal: "My art goal is to be a professional figurative painter. I’m also pretty interested in continuing to develop my drawing skills in long drawings and quick-sketch."
