In This Workshop...

Day 1: Basics of Perspective. Brian will cover basic 2-point perspective and shapes. This quick introduction will help you practice perspective well enough to be able to visualize basic shapes accurately in space without having to actually work out the perspective.

Day 2: Practice Exercise #1. Get warmed up and establish your skill baseline with three 10-minute head drawings from provided reference.

Day 3: Head Construction. Brian teaches you a head construction process that sets up your drawings for accurate feature placement. Accurate feature placement is a result of proper construction and set-up. By the time you get to drawing the features, their correct placement will already be known. If the features are misaligned or the placement is unclear, something has gone wrong earlier in the process

Day 4: Placing The Facial Features Bring everything you've learned in the previous two lessons together in this final head drawing lesson. You'll learn how to construct a head in perspective and then draw the facial features in place using your construction drawing as a guide.
Brian also shows you how to account for perspective that looks misaligned or distorted in reference photos. You’ll learn how to navigate this type of situation by using basic perspective knowledge to inform head construction and feature placement.

Day 5: Practice Exercise #2. Repeat the new skills you’ve learned to solidify the knowledge in your mind and see your progress with three more 10-minute head drawings. You can either re-draw the reference you used last time or pick three new images.

Bonus 60-minute lesson: Rendering A Female Head The complete head drawing essentials. Brian will demonstrate a fully-rendered head drawing. He will walk you through a full step-by-step process that can be used for any head drawing.

He’ll start with basic construction, then move on to feature placement, and complete the drawing by rendering light and shadows. If you’ve always felt a little unclear about the step-by-step process behind head drawing, this method makes it clear and provides a repeatable approach you can use to draw any head.

Brian Knox is a figure drawing instructor with over 12 years of teaching experience. He trained and began instructing at Watt’s Atelier where he taught for over 7 years before creating Foundation Art School with co-founder Olivia Page.
Brian’s signature teaching style combines traditional drawing methods with a logical, constructive approach to figure and head drawing. He is most passionate about finding ways to break down complex concepts and explain them in a way that anyone can understand.
When he’s not teaching art, he enjoys reading and hanging out with his awesome calico cat, Mochi.
