Having a better understanding of skulls will improve one’s head drawing abilities.
In this class, you will learn:
- Big shape of the head
- Skull anatomy
- Bony landmarks
- How Loomis and Reilly relate to the skull
- Shape, value, and edge
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
The underlying structure of the human head is created by the skull. An examination of the skull without being obscured by the facial features and the neck can be extremely beneficial to one’s understanding of the human head. This will help students develop their understanding of the big, overall shape of the head and how it looks from various angles. Drawing the big shape of the head is the critical first step to a successful head drawing and one that is often underestimated. We will be talking about a lot more than just the big shape of the head but this concept will be stressed throughout the class. Each week will build on the one before it. Topics include: anatomy, gesture, structure, shadow mapping (shape, value, and edge) and more. This class is open to all students and recommended for beginning and intermediate level students.
Week 1 = Anatomy of the skull, Week 2-3 = Structure of the skull from various angles, Week 4 = Shadow mapped skulls, Week 5 = Rendered skull.

You'll also be able to download the photo reference for the demo you have selected so you can practice. All selections are final for the Basic and Plus tiers, so be sure to choose carefully. You'll be able to find your viewing history in the History tab in case you'd like to revisit a previously watched demo. If you are an Unlimited subscriber, you can watch as many videos as you'd like each month. You can also save demos in the My Videos tab for quick reference or save full classes in the My Classes tab if you'd like to work through your demos sequentially as a class.
