Intro to Character Sketching: Heads

Learn the fundamentals of character sketching!

In this class, you will learn:

  • How characters can help tell a story
  • Using shape to acheive a likeness
  • Features and hair using shape hierarchy, overlap, and rhythm
  • How to create unique and dynamic character concepts


In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of drawing dynamic and expressive characters.You will also learn the basics of visual storytelling as it relates to character design. In week 1, we will cover what makes for a great character sketch and how your drawings are a means of exploring the character and telling a story to your audience. This lesson will also cover materials and sketchbooking techniques. Week 2 will go over the major shape decisions in sketching character heads and making shape decisions to achieve a likeness. In week 3, we will draw features and hair applying the principles of shape hierarchy, overlap, and rhythm. In week 4, we will explore how to contrast pairs and groups of characters to create unique and dynamic character concepts. Week 5 will be a demonstration of character drawings that combine all of the principles covered in the first 4 weeks.

Student Work Submission Deadline:

Each week Gold level students must upload their drawings within 5 days of the demo being released to be included in the critique video. For example, if a demo is released on 4/19 at 12am PT then the submission deadline is 4/23 at 11:59pm PT.
